Informed consent

Informed consent is a cornerstone of GCP and of the ethical review of clinical trials, but it remains a matter of debate. The EFGCP (European Forum for Good Clinical Practice) Annual Conference in January 2012 is indeed entitled : “Informed consent – How less could be more : Effecting a paradigm shift so we do inform participants”.

It is a common criticism that the length and complexity of information for potential participants means that it is not fit for its purpose : to explain a research study to someone considering whether to participate. It is argued by some that it is more a means to divest the researcher of responsibility or liability, should anything untoward happen.

The meeting will explore ways to improve the information provided. More on EGGCP.
